Paying Teachers More? Yes. Tying It to School Voucher Expansion? No, says Dr. Alex Hyres

School Vouchers Subsidize Utah's Rich and Religious

Gov. Spencer Cox recently announced his plan to increase teacher pay. A move applauded by those in the various fields of education, but Dr. Alex Hyres spotted a potential problem: It appears, according to what was reported in the Salt Lake Tribune about Gov. Cox's plan, that the increased pay would also include expanding school vouchers. Hyres wrote an op-ed for the Salt Lake Tribune in response, noting that school vouchers tend to end up subsidizing religious and private schools rather than schools short of resources or schools in rural areas where resources are most needed. Critically, as Hyres argues, there are lots of good reasons to increase teacher pay without tying it to the expansion of school vouchers.
